New Music Edmonton at The Aviary presents a daring exploration of the sonic arts in the capital region with an immersive and emotive showcase in New Music, New Voices #3 on November 7.
The next entry in the 2019/2020 season highlights a diversity of new music with strings, electronics, field recordings, saxophone, and keyboard. Electroacoustic performances are featured alongside soundscapes, sonic/visual depictions of body systems, and synthesized voice drawing from religious and folk influences.
Tom Merklinger‘s improvised electronic work displays folk and religious vocal influences and the minimal, sustained sounds of composers such as Éliane Radigue, Phil Niblock, and Morton Feldman. Visual artist Caitlin Sian Richards‘ performance uses recordings of household objects, viola, voice, and video to build up a sonic and visual system representing breath, teeth, lungs, and circulation. Isaac Earl, whose practice includes electroacoustic, text, and graphics-based compositions, will present an ambient environment and notions of distance between two worlds. As a recent addition to the local scene, Virginie Laliberté will make her Edmonton debut with a violin program including premieres of new works by Andrew Lawrence and Gabo Champagne. Saxophone/keyboard duo Leah Harman and Brendan McGrath will close the evening with a completely improvised set.
